BROOKINGS, S.D. – Kansas City Volleyball (2-16, 1-4) struggled to overcome a slow start and ended up yielding a straight sets decision to South Dakota State (10-3, 4-0) Thursday evening. The Roos produced 36 points, 24 kills, four aces, eight blocks, 19 assists and 38 digs as a team but gave up more to the Jackrabbits in all but one category.
Set one saw South Dakota State score the match's first six points before KC got on the board thanks to an Emry Brown kill. The freshman came off her first career double-double of 19 kills and 17 digs in the Roos 3-2 win over North Dakota last Saturday. The Jackrabbits controlled the pace and tempo of the opening set, going up 21-7 before Kansas City mounted a steady comeback effort that resulted in scoring seven of the next nine points.
The Roos were able to handle SDSU's punches better in sets two and three, going point for point with the Jabrabbits early on before SDSU pulled away midway through the second frame. KC took their first lead of the match on a Mia Weaver service ace to begin the scoring in set three. However, the Jackrabbits propped themselves up a few points and held off multiple Roos rallies to take the frame 25-18 and the match in straight sets.
Ryanne Wattree led the Roos in kills with eight and produced a .281 hitting percentage. Lyla Jones dished out nine assists to lead the squad and notched eight digs which was a share of the team lead with Alaina Larson. Ledisi Kpea shined defensively, tallying four block assists and two solos while Stella Smith totaled five block assists herself for the match.
Kansas City returns to the Swinney Center to face off with South Dakota at 7 p.m. next Wednesday evening.
