Platt and Porter come up big, deliver clutch goals in the 60th and 62nd minutes
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming into senior day, Kansas City (6-6-2, 1-2-1) needed a win on the board to keep pace in the Summit League standings. Both St. Thomas and Kansas City came into the match with a point each so far in conference action, making the matchup one both sides needed to see go their way.
The Roos were fit for the challenge, taking down St. Thomas 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Durwood Soccer Stadium. A pair of second half goals by Olivia Platt and Riley Porter proved to be the difference, aiding Kansas City to a three-point decision and putting their season total up to four in the race to the Summit League Tournament. Following the match, Kansas City honored seniors Audrey Brown, Lucia Lopez Fernandez, Delfina Zolesio, Emilia Zolesio and Riley Porter with a special ceremony.
In the early stages of the game, Kansas City capitalized on a big opportunity in the 14th minute. The Roos spaced out the middle of the field well with Fernandez moving the ball ahead to Kaityln Edwards in KC's attacking third. Edwards delivered a crisp lead pass to Ashley Koch who found a streaking D. Zolesio on the other side of the box. D. Zolesio worked her way past the Tommies backline and shot a laser beam into the lower left corner of the net to put the Roos up 1-0. For Zolesio, the score was her conference-leading 10th goal of the season.
Kansas City continued to control the pace of the first half, earning more shots and opportunities than the opposition while thwarting numerous Tommie corner and free kicks. Annika Patton stood tall in goal, earning three saves and preventing an equalizing-goal from materializing at several other junctions of the first half. The Roos went into the halftime break up a score and out-tallying the Tommies 5-4 in shots.
A few moments into the second half, St. Thomas provided an equalizer. Emily McCarthy chipped a ball high towards the crossbar and while Patton tipped it on a diving save attempt, the ball found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1 in the 46th minute. Even with a tied score, Kansas City kept the pressure on by hurrying ensuing Tommie shots while countering with their own attacks offensively.
In the 60th minute, an opportunity presented itself when D. Zolesio found the ball thanks to an errant clearance. The graduate forward weaved her way between multiple Tommie defenders and gave a perfect pass to Platt. A foot outside the box, Platt launched a left-footed stinger past the goalkeeper and into the bottom right corner of the net. Platt scored her fourth goal of the season and first since the Roos 2-2 draw against Northern Colorado.
Two minutes later, Kansas City struck once more thanks to another aggressive offensive attack. The Roos put numbers in the box with Ella Reyling touching it over to Koch on the far end line. Koch put a ball in great position for Porter who finished the play off with her first goal of the season and put the Roos up 3-1.
St. Thomas found their way back into the match with a goal in the 70th minute scored by Sydney Kubes, leading the Roos to ramp up the defensive pressure for the remainder of the contest. Olyvia Pugh made a crucial defensive play, making a clean slide tackle to break up a potential Tommies scoring chance. After a few more minutes of competitive action, Kansas City held on for the 3-2 decision, earning three key points and their first win in Summit League play.
Kansas City out-shot St. Thomas 10-6 and 5-2 in the second half. KC also notched eight shots on goal to the Tommies five. The Roos scored three goals in a game for the first time since KC took down Southeast Missouri State 4-3 in mid-September. The Roos registered four assists with Koch earning two in the match to bring her season total up to team-leading five assists.
Kansas City travels to Fargo, N.D. to take on North Dakota State for a mid-week clash at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening.
