
Kansas City Stays Undefeated With 2-0 Win Over Southern Illinois

A pair of second half goals by Muhr & Castleberry gives the Roos their best start since 2019
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a battle of two unbeaten squads, Kansas City Women's Soccer (3-0-2) prevailed over Illinois State (2-1-2) in 2-0 fashion Thursday evening at Durwood Soccer Stadium. After the Roos and the Salukis were even 0-0 through the first 45 minutes, Kansas City broke the tie with a goal by Madelyn Muhr and followed it up with a late goal by Brianna Castleberry.

- 1' / 0-0 | Ashley Koch gave an early chase to the ball in the box. After the ball was deflected by Saluki's goalkeeper Fabiana Solano, Castleberry notched the first of her team-leading five shots on goal but missed just to the left of the net.
- 8' / 0-0 | Salukis Guliana Balisteri took a shot on target that was saved by Roos goalkeeper Riley Moore, making it her first save of the season in three starts.
- 37' / 0-0 | One of the Roos first half corner kicks yielded a positive chance as Muhr launched the ball into the box. Adriana Benassi's shot on goal hit the post and Olvia Platt's shot off the rebound came up just off target.
- 55' / 1-0 | 10 minutes into the second half, the Roos got a free kick opportunity. Muhr headed the pass from Emery Rufflison across the line for Kansas City's opening goal.
- 78' / 2-0 | Late in the second half, Kayda Kamolz launched a ball into traffic which was met by Castleberry and a pair of Southern Illinois defenders. Castleberry squared herself towards the goal, planted her left foot and fired the ball into the back left corner of the net for the insurance goal.
- At 3-0-2, Kansas City is off to their best start in five years, when the Roos were 5-0-2 to begin their 2019 campaign.
- The Roos have now recorded three straight shutouts and four in five games, a streak that hasn't been accomplished by the program since 2017 when the Roos registered an impressive five shutouts in a row.
- Kansas City marked a couple season highs in the young 2024 campaign, including shots with 20 surpassing the prior season best of 19 vs Emporia State and eight corner kicks surpassing the prior best of six against the same Hornets squad.
- The Roos scored two goals in the second half, making it the second time this season Kansas City has notched a multi-goal half, the first being a two goal outing in the first half of the Roos 3-0 win over Lindenwood.
- The Roos had two first time goal scorers this season in Muhr and Castleberry, giving the team seven goal scorers overall for the season.
UP NEXT
Kansas City remains at home for the next two games, the first of which arrives on Sep. 5 as the Roos host Missouri State and will look to win four straight for the first time since 2019.
