Freshman Tory Lanham Wins Newcomer Award, a First in Kansas City Program History

ST.PAUL, MN — Kansas City took on the Summit League Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota, and did not disappoint. The men scored 66 points from 21 events, securing fifth place, while the women amassed 38 points, finishing sixth.

The Roos kicked off strongly on Thursday, qualifying 12 athletes for the finals in medal contention.Freshman Tory Lanham, who was also awarded the first-ever Newcomer of the Championships by a Roo, proved his mettle despite having competed in very few races leading up to the championships. Lanham excelled, qualifying for both the 100 meters and 200 meters. He was the top qualifier in the men's 200m, crossing the line in 20.96 seconds, and then won the event with a time of 21.07 seconds. In the 100 meters, he, along with two other KC athletes, clocked 10.47 seconds as the officials broke down the times to the tenth of a second. Logan Pratt and Junior Powell also made strong showings; Lanham placed fifth in the finals with a time of 10.50 seconds, while Powell, qualifying seventh, clinched a silver medal with a run of 10.33 seconds. Additionally, Lanham contributed to the Roos' Summit League 4x100 meter relay team, which posted a time of 40.06 seconds. He scored 17.5 points on his own and also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team, which finished fifth with a time of 3:22.45.

Caden Wehner was the sole Roo in the men's 400m hurdles final, finishing fifth with a time of 55.11 seconds after qualifying the previous day with a time of 56.11 seconds. Arvesta Schine, preferring no obstacles in the quarter mile, made the final after running 48.25 seconds in the 400 meter prelims and claimed a bronze medal with a personal best of 47.50 seconds.Abdelrahim Mahgoub continued to excel, qualifying for the 800m final in a time of 1:51.81 and later taking the silver medal on finals day with a time of 1:51.01.

Teresa Thomas competed in her first Summit League outdoor championships and advanced to the finals after running a 55.55, then improved her time to 54.74 seconds in the finals for fifth place. Breegan Barnett also made it to the 400m hurdles final, crossing the line in 1:02.91 and taking seventh in the final with a time of 1:02.92.McKenzie Pearson dominated the field events, taking gold in the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.25m (40' 2.25"), while her teammate Jaleesa McWashington finished second with a leap of 12.23m (40' 1.5"). The Roos concluded a remarkable outdoor season with these outstanding performances.
