St. Thomas jumped out early and KC was unable to make up enough ground
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Softball (12-20, 1-2 Summit) fell behind early and was unable to make up enough ground in the late stages of its game against St. Thomas (6-25, 2-1 Summit) today, falling, 5-1. The loss gave St. Thomas the series win following a split of the two games yesterday.
The middle of the Roos' lineup produced some base hits, but Kansas City was unable to capitalize, leaving runners in scoring position twice. Lexy Smith notched two of KC's four hits, breaking up the Tommies' perfect game with a single in the fifth.
KEY MOMENTS | HIGHLIGHTS
- Top 2 / 0-2 | Katie Noble gave up a pair of runs in the first inning, but logged five strikeouts in the first two innings. With runners on second and third in the second, Noble battled through an eight-pitch at-bat to get a strikeout and get out of the inning.
- Top 5 / 0-5 | The first 12 Kansas City batters went up-and-down with no runners reaching base, but Smith stepped up and put a single through the right side to break up the no-hitter. Sydney Nichols singled on the next at-bat and the runners moved to second and third with no outs. KC was unable to take advantage as the next three batters were retired.
- Top 6 / 1-5 | Abby Husak sent a double over the left fielder's head with one out to get the Roos going, and Noble put a ball in-play and forced an error that allowed Husak to score. Smith would grab another single to move Noble into scoring position, but the rally would end there. KC was unable to make anything happen in the seventh, and UST claimed the win.
STATS TO NOTE
- Smith notched her first multi-hit game since March 3 after missing three weeks with injury. She has logged a hit in her past four games and boasts a team-leading .403 batting average.
- Husak's sixth inning double gave her a hit in all three games this weekend, tying her season-best hitting streak.
- Camryn Stickel pitched the game's final five innings, giving up just two hits and one earned run. She has now allowed one-or-fewer earned runs in eight of her last 10 appearances.
