Kansas City Opens Conference Play at Home Against St. Thomas
3/22/2024 11:39:00 AM | Softball
The Roos and Tommies begin play Saturday at 12 p.m. with a doubleheader
Kansas City Notes
- The Roos enter the matchup hot, on their longest winning streak not only of the season, but the longest winning streak of the Stokes-O'Connor era in Kansas City. The Roos put up wins over Western Illinois and two against SIUE to start their streak last week and picked up wins over Creighton and Iowa State in midweek matchups.Â
- Kansas City's 7-3 win over Iowa State on Wednesday marks its first win over a Big 12 school since March 19, 2021 when the Roos defeated No. 6 Oklahoma State 6-5. It was also the Blue and Gold's first win over Iowa State since April 10, 2002 when Kansas City took back-to-back wins against the Cyclones.Â
- In the win over Iowa State, Katie Noble pitched her first complete game of the season. She threw a season-high five strikeouts, just one short of tying her career high of six that she earned against St. Thomas on May 5, 2023. Noble also went 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring one run and bringing in two more, one from a single and another from a base on ball.
- Earlier this week, Camryn Stickel earned recognition as the TicketSmarter Softball Peak Pitcher of the Week. Stickel's performance the week prior helped set the Roos on their winning streak. In their three games, Stickel notched two saves and one win, throwing an ERA of 0.0 and allowing no runs earned or unearned. Throughout the season, Stickel has thrown over 100 innings and more than 65 strikeouts.Â
- Last season, the Roos opened conference play by hosting North Dakota State. The Blue and Gold were swept by the Bison, falling in five innings on two occasions. Since rejoining the Summit in 2021 the Roos are 1-2 in the Conference opener series.Â
St. Thomas Notes
- St. Thomas enters the matchup on a three-game losing skid, going 1-4 in their tournament at Boise State last weekend. The Tommies picked up their lone win against Idaho State in their first matchup, notching their fourth win of the season 5-3. The Tommies have also found success against Southern Indiana, Loyola and SIUE.Â
- At the start of conference play last year the Tommies had notched eight wins so far. They finished the season with 18 wins and in sixth place in the Summit League, just one spot above Kansas City.Â
- Both the Tommies and the Roos faced Creighton earlier this season. Kansas City picked up a win over the Bluejays in an extra-inning matchup for its fourth consecutive win. While the Tommies fell 16-8 against the Bluejays they saw a season-high tying number of hits, earning 12 hits as a team.
- Kansas City and St. Thomas both have key two-way players on their roster. Katie Noble plays interchangeably in the circle, at first and hitting for Kansas City. Junior Ella Cook does the same for the Tommies in the circle and at the plate. Cook leads the Tommies in RBIs this season with 21 and has notched three of their four wins in the circle.Â
- This weekend, the Tommies will look to extend their winning streak over the Roos. St. Thomas took the series last year, going 2-1 against the Roos and picked up a win in game three 11-6.Â
