The Roos out-shot UIC, 16-5, but a draw was the end result
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Women's Soccer was dominant in possession and dangerous in the attack throughout its match with UIC this afternoon, but the end result was a draw, 1-1. The Roos out-shot the Flames, 16-5, with Kayda Kamolz scoring her second-career goal in the 12th minute on an assist from Lily Stedman. Riley Moore was not often called into action, but when she was she played with steady hands, making three saves.
KEY MOMENTS
- 6' / 0-0 | Brianna Castleberry set the tone early in the first half with the Roos' first shot of the night, letting an attempt fly from the left side of the goal but sending it just high of the mark.
- 12' / 1-0 | The Flames had a clean look at the goal, but Riley Moore made an outstanding save, diving to her right and smothering the ball. That sparked a counter-attack for the Roos, resulting in Lily Stedman streaking up the middle of the field. She was met by a UIC defender and laid the ball off to Kayda Kamolz on the left side, who turned over her back shoulder and let the ball sail towards the back post, finding the side netting and giving the Roos an early advantage.

- 22' / 1-0 | The Roos had a series of attempts in the box, first a shot by Holland Hawkins that was deflected and sent sky-high. Maya Prehm brought the ball down and found Caijah Anderson, who attempted two more shots, both of which were blocked.
- 63' / 1-0 | Hawkins made a move up the left side to lose a defender and found Madison Page at the top of the box. Page let her first shot of the season rip, but it was blocked by the defense. She settled the ball again for another shot, sending it wide right of the goal.
- 69' / 1-1 | A corner kick created an opportunity for the Flames, which was headed into the back of the net for an equalizing goal.
- 76' / 1-1 | Kansas City built a pair of opportunities, first a great pass from Kamolz found Castleberry with a chance at goal, but a defender stepped in at the last second to block it. Kamolz had another opportunity just moments later, but it was deflected out of bounds by the keeper.
- 84' / 1-1 | A quick throw in found Stedman moving in the attacking third. The Roos switched field as Gigi Mir found Emma Byrne streaking up the left side. Byrne played a ball to the middle of the box, finding Castleberry, whose shot was punched above the crossbar by the UIC keeper.
STATS TO NOTE
- The Roos' 16 shot attempts tied a season-high, last coming in KC's 1-1 draw at Southern Illinois. KC has now reached the 16-shot mark twice this year after doing so just two times in the last three seasons combined.
- Kansas City went deep into the bench with nine substitutions on the day, including the Roos' 2022 goal leader Madison Page, who played 22 minutes in her season debut. Captain Sophia Limongi was KC's lone outfield player to log a full 90 minutes.
- The Flames were limited to five shots on the afternoon, the third time this year that the Roos have limited an opponent to five-or-fewer shot attempts.
UP NEXT
The Roos' next test comes on Thursday at 7 p.m., as KC will play host to Kansas at Durwood Soccer Stadium. The Jayhawks are Head Coach Jess Smith's alma mater and are currently 3-0-2 on the season.
