Despite battling back from two sets down, the Roos could not pull out the victory
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Volleyball dropped the KC Roos Klassic finale in an intense matchup with Saint Louis, 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 11-25, 15-13). After two close sets lost, the Roos battled back and won a tight third set before dominating the fourth set. The final set was even throughout, but Saint Louis won the final two points to hang on and win the match.Â
SET-BY-SET
- SET ONE / 23-25 | Kansas City jumped out to an early 5-1 lead off consecutive blocks, both of which Carly Gillen was in the mix for. Saint Louis would respond with a run from there to take a five-point advantage at 18-13, but multiple kills from Gillen would cut the deficit to three. The Roos would tie it up late at 23 a piece, but Saint Louis won the next two points to take the opening set.
- SET TWO / 22-25 | Kansas City jumped out to an early lead yet again in the second set as they got off to a 7-4 start after an Odyssey Warren kill. Saint Louis would fight back to even things at 11, before going on a three-point run to take a 16-13 advantage. The two teams would trade points the rest of the way, as Saint Louis hung on to win the set.
- SET THREE / 25-22 | For the third set in a row the Roos got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 7-2 lead after kills from Warren and Sila Ozyurek. Saint Louis recovered to even things up at 12, and from there the teams would trade points back and forth with little separation. A crucial three-point run by the Roos would give them a 20-17 edge, which they would hang onto thanks to a Blair Taylor ace to cap off the set.
- SET FOUR / 25-11 | The Roos got off to a great start in the fourth set, taking an early 8-3 lead headlined by kills from Sydney Henry and Kimora Whetstone, forcing a Saint Louis timeout. The Roos didn't stop there, as after the timeout they went on a 7-1 run to open a double-digit lead. Kansas City would never look back, finishing the set in dominating fashion with multiple kills by Warren to force a fifth and final set.
- SET FIVE / 13-15 | The deciding set began with little separation, with the two teams trading blows to tie things up at five a piece. The Roos would build a slim two-point advantage at 9-7, but Saint Louis would answer to tie things up at 12. Saint Louis would go on to win the last two points to secure the set and match.Â
