KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Volleyball and Head Coach Christi Posey are bringing a Roo legend back to the city, adding former Summit League Defensive Player of the Year Maddie Renn to the coaching staff as an assistant coach. Renn will assist the Roos in social media management, recruiting and player development, among other duties.
"Kansas City is my home away from home," Renn said. "I owe a lot of my athletic successes to the coaches and program here in Kansas City, and I am excited to give back to the program and be a part of the Roo family again."
Renn comes to Kansas City fresh off of using her fifth year of eligibility at Butler University. In her lone season with the Bulldogs, she appeared in all 31 matches, playing 111 sets. She went for 1.91 digs per set, ranking fourth on the team. In addition, she was one of the team's leaders in serve reception, ranking second on the team with 496 receptions at a .954 clip. Her mark of 23 service aces on the year also ranked second on the squad.
A four-year player and three-year starter at Kansas City from 2018-21, Renn was a defensive stalwart in the Roos' back line during her playing career. Her name is scattered across the program record books, notching the seventh-most single-season digs in 2021 with 531, and holding the ninth-and-11th-best digs per set marks for her performances in 2021 and 2020, respectively. She also holds the eighth-most career digs (1,144) and the fourth-best career digs per set mark (3.69). She earned Honorable Mention All-League honors as a junior in 2020, and then was a First Team All-League honoree in 2021. She stands as the only Roo in program history to earn All-League Defensive Player of the Year honors, bringing home the award in 2021.
"We have been blessed with exceptional talent and great character on our teams throughout our time here in Kansas City. Maddie personifies that, as well as determination, grit and a winner's mindset," Posey said. "Our team will benefit from her expertise, her experience and her relatability. Maddie was a player who brought an intensity and purpose to every practice, pre-game and match. We're very excited to have her on staff to help guide our young players and relate to recruits as a former Kansas City student-athlete. Maddie will be training our liberos/defensive specialists, as well as managing recruiting correspondence. Her eagerness to learn all phases of college coaching and the desire to give back to our program as well as the Kansas City community were key reasons why Maddie applied for this position. We believe she will have tremendous influence as an assistant coach and we look forward to mentoring an enthusiastic, dedicated, driven, female on her coaching journey."
In addition to her playing experience, Renn spent time from 2021-22 with the Kansas City Mavs Volleyball club as an assistant coach.
She handled business off the court as well, earning her Master's in Management from Butler in 2023. This came after earning a Bachelor's in Communications from UMKC in 2022, where she was also an Academic Honor Roll performer in the 2021-22 academic year.
A native of Lincoln, Neb., Renn was a Lincoln Southeast HS graduate in 2018. She currently resides in Kansas City, Mo.
