Kansas City Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 3 Oral Roberts

The Roos played aggressive but couldn’t find an equalizer in the second half
BROOKINGS, S.D. — Kansas City Women's Soccer (3-7-8, 2-3-3) lost to No. 3 Oral Roberts (7-6-4, 4-3-1) in an cold and windy matchup. Oral Roberts made it to the scoreboard first, off a Kansas City deflection turned own goal. The Roos organized quickly with Madison Page finding the back of the net 38 seconds later, on an assist from Brianna Castleberry. Shortly after, Castleberry drove the ball to goal, this time drawing a penalty in the box. The penalty kick went just left to keep the game tied at one-all.
The Golden Eagles found the back of the net, following a corner kick, and went into halftime up by one. Following the break, Kansas City came out hot immediately earning a corner kick at the start of the half. The Roos staged a handful of offensive pushes but could not find the equalizing goal.

SEASON IN REVIEW
The Roos opened their season with a 2-1 win over Lindenwood on Aug. 17. Kansas City went 2-3-3 during conference play improving on their 1-5-3, 2022 conference record. Along with its improved record, Kansas City earned 18 goals this season, seven more than the season prior.
Head Coach Jess Smith earned Summit League Coach of the Year, helping produce the Roos first playoff berth since rejoining the Summit League. Castleberry was named to the All-Summit First Team and All-Newcomer Team. She led the Roos in every offensive category. On the defensive end, both Smith and Limongi earned Honorable Mention in the Summit League postseason awards. They both started all 18 games this season.

KEY MOMENTS
- 10'/ 0-0| On an Oral Roberts offensive drive, Riley Moore had to step off the line to make the play. The Golden Eagles were able to get around and got off a shot, but Sophia Limongi was there to make the stop to keep the game scoreless.
- 17'/ 1-1| Castleberry brought the ball up the field quickly, she crossed one into Page who found the net to equalize the game.
- 45'/2 -1| The Golden Eagles had another offensive push to close out the end of the first half. They landed two shots on goal, Moore blocked the first shot, recovered, and then made a save on the second to hold Oral Roberts to two goals.
- 47'/2-1| Kansas City got to work quickly at the beginning of the second half, earning a corner kick on the first play of the game. Lily Stedman was able to get her head on the ball, but the touch was off target.
- 90'/2-1| With less than ten seconds remaining, Kansas City made one final push. Page brought the ball down the field, getting a shot off, but it was blocked by an Oral Roberts player.
- The temperature in Brookings was 28 degrees at kickoff, with windchills around 12 degrees, but six Roos played a full 90 minutes. Amongst those six, Anna Jennings earned a season-high in minutes and Sydney Maddox earned a career-high.
- This was the Roos' first postseason, berth since 2019. Across two games, in the 2019 postseason the Roos made a combined six saves, with two in the first game and four in the second. In the matchup, Moore earned seven saves, for her eighth performance this season with five or more saves.
- Castleberry's assist was her third this season. On the team, she is tied for first in assists and leads the team in points with 15 and goals with six.
- Page's goal was her first of the season and one of the Roos' two shots on goal. She averages just over 46 minutes a game and played 56 minutes in the matchup.
