
Softball Drops Defensive Battle to No. 16 Michigan

TAMPA, Fla. – Kansas City Softball (1-4) got a second chance at No.16 Michigan (3-2) this morning but dropped the defensive battle in a 0-2 decision. Kloe Hilbrenner and Delainey Fenoglio were the only Roos to earn hits in the game, while Casey Stout and the Kansas City defense held Michigan to just one run until their final at-bat.

Kansas City will head to Las Vegas at the end of the week for another five-game weekend, starting with Utah Valley on Friday at 12:30 p.m. CST. The Roos will also face UNLV and Weber State at the UNLV Desert Classic.

- 1 / 0-1 | Hilbrenner led off the game with a hit but was caught stealing third before the Roos could bring her home. Michigan put together a couple hits with two outs to bring in their first run of the game.
- 2 / 0-1 | The Roos were retired in a row on offense but held strong on defense to keep it a one-run game.
- 3 / 0-1 | Ashley Thorne reached on a walk and moved into scoring position with a steal but could not get past second. Stout followed with a seven-pitch inning, including a strikeout to sit down the Wolverines.
- 4 / 0-1 | Sydney Nichols led off with a walk and Fenoglio singled but two other strikeouts in the inning plagued the Roos. Michigan kept swinging in the bottom of the fourth but only one would reach first base.
- 5 / 0-1 | Michigan's Storako struck out the side to keep the Roos scoreless, while Stout and the KC defense continued to hold the Wolverines.
- 6 / 0-2 | Hilbrenner notched her second hit of the game, but Kansas City remained without a run. Camryn Stickel came on in relief and Michigan pushed another one across the plate.
- 7 / 0-2 | Kansas City had one more chance to mount a comeback but could not reach base to make the threat.
- Kansas City's offense was stifled by 13 strikeouts and only three hits in the game.
- Hilbrenner finished the weekend with seven hits, including two in this game, coming away with a .412 batting average against strong pitching. She also started the season with eight stolen bases in five games.
- Fenoglio earned a hit in each game of the USF Rawlings Invitational, finishing with five hits, two RBI, two runs scored, a double and a homerun.
- Stout went a full five innings against the No. 16 team in the nation, only allowing one run. The defense attributed to that, shutting down seven hits from Michigan and remaining errorless.
- Stickel came one in relief and allowed three hits and a run in the sixth inning.
