Roos Drop Five-Set Decision to Missouri State

LAWRENCE, Kan. – In their final non-conference game of the year, Kansas City Volleyball dropped a 3-2 (26-24, 17-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-11) decision to Missouri State. Maddie Renn led the Roos' defensive efforts, picking up 27 digs on the day.

- S1 | The teams were neck-and-neck to begin the match, with a De'Janae Arnold kill giving KC a 7-6 advantage.
- S1 | Missouri State jumped up to a 17-11 lead, but another Arnold kill sparked a 6-1 run that brought the Roos within a point.
- S1 | Kansas City battled to force extra play in the first set, but the bear won the last two points to take a 1-0 lead.
- S2 | A solo block by Carly Gillen gave the Roos a 9-7 lead early in the set.
- S2 | Leah Green sent across a service ace to give KC a 17-12 lead and force an MSU timeout.
- S2 | Back-to-back kills by Melanie Brecka capped a 5-0 run, giving Kansas City all the advantage, it needed to take the second set, 25-17.
- S3 | Another ace by Green brought the Roos within three, but Missouri State responded with an 8-3 run.
- S3 | Kansas City attempted to battle back, but the Bears took the final two points of the set to take a 2-1 advantage.
- S4| After trading points to begin the set, a kill by Raina Smith sparked a 6-1 run for the Roos.
- S4 | The Bears drew within three, but an ace by Kennedy Schritenthal forced an MSU timeout.
- S4 | Bree Thompson came through with a kill on set point to force a decisive fifth set.
- S5 | A kill by Arnold gave the Roos an early 4-2 lead
- S5 | Thompson sent across a kill to draw within two, but the Bears finished the match on a 4-2 run to take the victory.
STATS TO NOTE
- Three Roos finished with double-digit kills, led by Brecka's 14.
- Alli Schomers posted 44 assists and 13 digs, her third double-double of the year.
- Thompson finished with eight kills, her Kansas City career-high.
- Despite the loss, the Roos out-hit the Bears, .214-to-.177.
- "We're disappointed that we didn't execute at a high level consistently enough. Ten blocks was a solid effort, but we've had better defensive efforts and we'll need to clean up serving errors to be the team we'll need to be at the start of conference play."
- "As we continue to play better competition, there is less margin for error. Overall, it's been a good preseason for us. We played some really good teams that challenged us in many ways. We'll keep learning and improving, and we're looking forward to conference play."
