Men's Basketball Heads to Sioux Falls for Summit Tournament

The Roos take on North Dakota State on Sunday at 8:45 p.m.
Reaching for the Summit
- The Roos enter postseason play with an 11-12 overall record, playing an even 7-7 in Summit League contests.
- Kansas City will be playing as the number six seed for the first time in Head Coach Billy Donlon's tenure and the sixth time in program history. The Roos hold a 1-6 record all-time as the six-seed.
- Kansas City's most recent appearance as a six-seed came in the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, falling 77-74 to Grand Canyon in the quarterfinals.
- The Roos' lone win as the No. 6 team came in the 2007 Summit League Championships. Kansas City took down No. 3 Valparaiso in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 2 Oakland by four points in the semis.
- The Roos are 8-14 all-time in conference tournament quarterfinals, with the last win coming in 2017. In its last five conference tournaments (not including last season's canceled WAC Tournament), Kansas City holds a 3-2 record in quarterfinal play.Â
- KC takes on North Dakota State in the Summit League Quarterfinals, the first time these teams have met in postseason play since 2013. The Roos were a six-seed in that year as well, falling to the No. 3 Bison 69-58.
- Kansas City has yet to advance to a conference tournament championship game. The Roos hold an 0-8 record all-time in conference semifinals.Â
- The Roos have made 16 appearances in The Summit League Championships, with this being the first since 2013.Â
- The Roos hold a 5-11 record all-time in Summit League quarterfinals, winning as the lower-seeded team four times.
2020-21 by the Numbers
- With a 7-7 conference record, Kansas City finishes at .500-plus in conference play for the second year in a row. It is the first time since the 2004-05 and '05-06 seasons that the Roos have finished at-or-above .500 in conference play in back-to-back seasons.
- The Roos average 70.3 points per game, good for fifth in the Summit League, but hold opponents to a Summit-best 62.3 points per game. That mark is the lowest in the league by nearly five points.
- Kansas City is one of the most efficient offensive teams in the nation, connecting on 50% of its shots from the field. That mark is good for tops in the Summit and eighth in Division One.
- The Roos are the best team in the league at defending the three-point line, allowing opponents to connect on just 32.3% of their three-point attempts.Â
- Kansas City assists on a Summit-best 14.74 field goals per game. The Roos average an assist on 54.9% of their made field goals.
- The Roos' perimeter defense is the best in the league, averaging 8.1 steals per game. The next closest team in the Summit is Oral Roberts at 6.35. Four Roos rank in the top-ten in the Summit League in steals per game, and the squad's overall mark is 40th in Division One.
- Brandon McKissic has been the Roos' senior leader and was recently named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Year and a Second Team All-League Player. McKissic ranks top-ten in the Summit in points per game (17.5), assists per game (3.3), steals per game (1.6), field goal percentage (51.8%), three-point makes per game (1.7) and minutes per game (34.1). His Defensive Player of the Year honor comes after making the WAC All-Defensive team the previous two years.
- McKissic has scored in double-digits in each of his previous 16 appearances and has broken the 20-point mark five times. He has led the Roos in scoring 10 times, assists six times and rebounding twice.
- In his sophomore season, Josiah Allick has been the Roos' most consistent presence in the post. He has collected four double-doubles and earned a spot on the Honorable Mention All-League team with a 14.6 point, 5.8 rebound per game average. He currently leads the Summit League in field goal percentage, connecting on 57.1% of his shots.
- Despite battling injury for a large part of the season, Marvin Nesbitt Jr. has been a star for the Roos when he is on the court. The senior averages 10.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, connecting on 59% of his field goal attempts. In his first game returning from injury, Nesbitt scored a career-high 20 points in the Feb. 19 win over Denver.
- Zion Williams has fulfilled the role of 'power guard' for the Roos, leading the team in rebounding six times from the point guard position. Against Denver on Feb. 19, he posted his first-career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Williams has also led the Roos in assists eight times, averaging 2.5 per game.
Breaking Records
- On Nov. 27 in the Negro League Baseball Museum Tipoff Classic, the Roos annihilated the record books, defeating Greenville 138-97. The team set program records for single-game scoring, field goal percentage, field goals made, and assists.
- On Dec. 19, Kansas City took on Kansas Christian College twice, marking the first true double-header in recorded Division One history. The Roos took care of the Falcons, winning game one 98-42 and game two 95-36.
- As it stands right now, the Roos' season field goal percentage of 50% would be the best in program history, breaking the 1991-92 Roos' mark of 49.7%.
- McKissic will be remembered in the Kansas City record books for years to come. His career marks in points (1,165), assists (248) and steals (129) are all in the top-ten in program history.
- As it stands right now, Josiah Allick's season field goal percentage of 57.1% would be the eighth-best in program history.
