Kansas City, MO. – Kansas City (14-7) returned home to face #15 Arkansas (24-3) after a month of being on the road. The cold, rainy day put a damper on the excellent pitching performances by the Roos as of late. Two big offensive innings from the Razorbacks left the Roos in a deficit early and gave the opposition the leg up in the 3-9 final.
The Roos' speed was showcased early as they grabbed the first lead of the game. Kloe Hilbrenner started the game with a triple and scored on a passed ball to put Kansas City up 1-0 after the first inning.
Arkansas scored all of their runs in the second and fourth innings and held the Kansas City offense at bay the remainder of the game. Mia Hoveland struck out four Razorback hitters in her 3.2 innings pitched, but the tight strike zone proved troublesome as she gave seven free passes that lead to nine Arkansas runs.
Cam Stickel came in the fourth to help the Roos get out of a five-run inning on defense. Stickel settled in nicely during her 2.1 innings pitched, only allowing four hits and zero runs to the Razorbacks. Her rise ball led to five pop-ups by Arkansas and easy plays for the Kansas City defense.
A small Kansas City rally in the bottom of the fourth chipped away at the lead. Lia Lombardini hit a single and Ally Vonfeldt followed with a hit of her own. Delainey Fenoglio brought home Lombardini with a single through the five-six hole and Alexis D'Ambrosio brought in Vonfeldt to tally two runs in the inning.
Hayley Patterson came in to close the final inning for Roos' on the mound. Patterson didn't allow any hits or runs to the Razorback offense.
Kansas City opens Summit League play this weekend in a four-game series against South Dakota State. The series will be played at the Urban Youth Academy, Home of Kansas City Softball, on Saturday March 27 and Sunday March 28 at approximately 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. both days. This will be a big conference matchup for the Roos as the Jackrabbits were picked to finish second in the preseason poll.
