Hoveland dominates in game one and Vonfeldt hits game winning homerun
Stillwater, OK. – Kansas City Softball (13-6) splits in the second day of the Mizuno Classic. In the first game of the day, Mia Hoveland commanded the circle and the Roos' offense pulled through late to put Kansas City over UTSA 4-1. The second game wasn't as fruitful as Oklahoma State dominated offensively with revenge on the mind.
Game No. 1 v. UTSA [Final 4-1]
In a battle against the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners (5-13), Kansas City waited until their final inning at the plate to dominate on offense and steal the game away. The game was a pitcher's duel through five innings where Hoveland dominated the entire game.
"Mia came out of the gate really good," Shaw said. "She struck out the first six batters that gave her the momentum she needed to finish the game on auto pilot after a long game last night."
The Roadrunners only offense came from a rare walk by Hoveland in the top of the fourth who later scored on a two-out double. That was one of the only two hits Hoveland gave up in the game and the only run allowed by the Roos' defense. She finished with nine strikeouts after sitting down the first six batters of the game.
"A win is a win, it doesn't have to be pretty," Shaw said.
Kansas City saved their best for last as they entered the bottom of the sixth down 0-1. Kloe Hilbrenner began the bottom of the sixth with an infield single. Faith Denning came into pinch hit and put one in the outfield to get herself on base and move Hilbrenner to third. Lia Lombardini drove one to the outfield for a sac fly that scored Hilbrenner and tied the game.
"Ally has a lot of pop in her bat," Shaw said. "She is in a groove and when she is aggressive she has great power."
The Roos weren't satisfied with a tie, they decided to break it open and continue their big sixth inning. Ally Vonfeldt bombed a two-run homerun, her second-long ball of the weekend, that scored Denning. Delainey Fenoglio singled up the middle to continue the hit parade and Maggie Klover came in to add speed on the bases. One more Kansas City run crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth when Klover scored on a Faith Willis hit to give the Roos a three-run lead going into the final inning.
Game No. 2 v. #6 Oklahoma State [Final 0-13]
Oklahoma State reconciled the series against Kansas City in their second matchup of the Mizuno Classic. The long ball and speed of the Cowgirls dominated from the beginning. Five homeruns from the OSU squad couldn't be matched by the Roos' offense.
Kansas City recorded seven hits in the game. Denning and Hilbrenner recorded doubles in the game. Lombardini, Willis, and Abby Sciara all hit singles. And a few fresh faces to the Roos' batting lineup notched hits, including Macy Hornosky and Maggie Klover.
The Roos are back in action tomorrow for their final game of the Mizuno Classic. They will face UTSA at 10 a.m. for a chance to sweep the Roadrunners.
