
Roos Sweep Series with Win in Double Overtime Thriller!

QUINCY, Ill. – Kansas City Women's Soccer (4-3-0, 4-2-0) sweeps the series versus conference opponent Western Illinois (0-6-0, 0-6-0) in a tremendous win in double overtime this Sunday afternoon. With a defensive battle on both sides throughout the first and second half, the Roos consistency on the offensive attack outshined the Leathernecks in the 104th minute of play with a  final score 2 – 1.
The Roos intensity on offense showcased their will to earn the lead early. With a total of four corner kick opportunities in the first half alone, numerous Roos saw action in the frontline. Emily Jensen produced the initial attack in the 9th minute of play followed by Emma Wilson who contributed and led in total shot attempts earning four and making two shots on goal. In the 28th minute Sophia Limongi supplied another shot attempt.
"We were really aggressive on the attack today an did a great job of getting numbers forward to combine around the ball" said Head Coach Jessica Smith, adding that "Anna Jennings was a dangerous threat from the left wing and created many chances for us with her ability to attack the end line and serve."
After subbing into the game in the 34th minute, Adrianna Pratt joined the offensive effort and earned the first scored goal for the Roos in the last minute of the first half, sending the Roos into halftime with the score 1 – 0.
The Leathernecks tried to break through the Roos defense in several attempts on goal during the second half. After a long range shot and the wind on their side, the Leathernecks scored in the 60th minute and remained at one goal through the end of the match.
"Afton made a couple big saves for us and our entire back line was solid. I think we did a good job as as a group putting pressure on them," commented Head Coach Jessica Smith.
GoalkeeperAfton Fennewald kept the Leathernecks at bay with a total of 6 saves in the match. Â
As the regular 90 minutes of play finished with the tied 1 to 1 score, the Roos determination to push forward proved unstoppable. After the first 10 minutes of overtime was scoreless, the second overtime brought out the Roos extra gear to finish with the win. Â
"We were tired going into the second overtime, which is to be expected for the second match of the weekend. Even through the fatigue, the team still looked energized and motivated as we started the last 10 minutes," said Head Coach Jessica Smith.
During a great press on the ball by Emily Jensen which caused the Leatherneck defender to play the ball out of bounds; the Roos earned a corner kick opportunity that would result in victory. Hayden Burnett served a great ball into the scramble in front of the box that resulted in Morgan McLaughlin scoring in the 104th minute of double overtime finishing the match 2 to 1.
