Kansas City Falls to NDSU to Split Weekend Series

Fargo, N.D. – Today's second game of the series presented another physical match for Kansas City (1-2, 1-1). North Dakota State (1-1, 1-1) earned the series split by holding the Roos to only three shots on goals. Keeper Afton Fennewald made five saves on seven shots, but the Kansas City offense didn't match the production.
The Spring 2021 schedule brings new challenges as conference games have been moved to a two game in three-day format where they face the same opponent twice. In normal seasons it is even rare to play the same team twice in one season. These circumstances require a lot of focus to be able to win back-to-back games.
"We came out flat and didn't match the physicality in the beginning," Head Coach Jess Smith explained.
The first shot on goal for the Roos didn't come until 49-minute mark by junior Emma Wilson. Kansas City's defense looked solid in the second half until they had to change their formation to try and equalize. Bela Gonzalez and Madison Zurmuehlen tried to impose a shot past the NDSU keeper in the final seven minutes but couldn't get one across the goal line.
"We are disappointed in the loss, but I'm really proud of our team's performance in the second half," Smith said. "The did exactly what we asked of them tactically and battled to the end."
Kansas City is scheduled to come home to Durwood Soccer Stadium on Friday at 11 a.m. to take on the University of South Dakota Coyotes in another Summit League series.
