The Roos out-shot the Jackrabbits, but a free kick goal by SDSU made the difference
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Women's Soccer took on one of the Summit League's top teams in South Dakota State this evening, falling in a 1-0 decision. The Roos bounced back from a slow first half to give the Jackrabbits a challenge, but could not find the back of the net.
KEY MOMENTS
- 4' | Mackenzie Caldwell was called into action early, making her first save on the Jackrabbits' first shot attempt.
- 8' | Kassi Ginther was the first Roo to find room for a shot, letting one off that went high of the goal.
- 11' | The Roos created a dangerous opportunity on a long run by Emma Wilson, but her shot was saved by the SDSU keeper.
- 15' | Morgan McLaughlin sent a picture-perfect cross into the box that found the foot of Ginther, but she could not square up on the ball.
- 22' | Sophia Limongi made a monster tackle in the box to stop a Jackrabbit attack in its tracks.
- 25' | The Roos were whistled for a foul just outside of the box, setting SDSU for a free kick goal to take the 1-0 lead.
- 27' | Kansas City attempted to equalize just moments later, with Limongi sending a corner kick into the head of Lillie Fields, whose shot attempt was inches wide of the goal post.
- 34' | Caldwell made her biggest save of the match on a header by the Jackrabbits, leaping to punch the ball into the air, where it was cleared away by the Roos' defense.
- 39' | Rileigh Kuhs looked to equalize on a dart from 30 yards out, sending it barely over the crossbar.
- 50' | The Roos' defense stood strong against two-straight shots by SDSU, blocking both of them before they could reach the goal.
- 60' | Wilson found room for another shot, launching it into the arms of the Jackrabbits' keeper.
- 70' | Limongi wanted to match the SDSU free kick goal with one of her own, sending a shot from 30 yards out that was tipped by the goalie and deflected off the crossbar. Lily Stedman came down with the rebound and tried a shot of her own, but there was too much traffic and it was blocked by the Jackrabbit defense.
- 82' | Kayda Kamolz had a chance in the game's late stages, but sent the shot high of the mark.
- 89' | Emma Wilson drew a foul just outside of the box in the closing seconds, but time expired before the Roos were allowed to set up for the spot kick.
STATS TO NOTE

- Limongi set a season-high with two shots on goal, and Wilson has now recorded a shot on goal in four consecutive matches. Â
- Sam Marek placed a shot on goal and led all Roo substitutes in minutes.Â
COACH JESS SMITH, QUOTED
- "We started the game pretty slow, but we challenged the team at halftime, and it was night-and-day difference in the second half. South Dakota State is one of the top teams in the league, so I'm happy for the way we came out and batted. We had opportunities to win the game."
- "We've been trying to give the team a lot of confidence and freedom to get forward and take chances, so I'm really happy that we out-shot them. Obviously, we want to capitalize on some of the opportunities, but I told the team after the game that we're going to stay loose, keep going at them and the goals are going to come. We just need to stay positive and confident."
- "Now, our focus shifts to South Dakota. I think it's a good matchup for us, but we have to come out and play 90 minutes of our game and be physically engaged. I think we have a good chance to get a result."
