Volleyball Sweeps WIU on the Road

Melanie Brecka did it all for the Roos, finishing with 19 kills, 18 digs, two aces and three block assists
MACOMB, Ill. - Kansas City Volleyball trailed Western Illinois late in all three sets this evening, but used end-game resolve to sweep the Leathernecks, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-20). Melanie Brecka accounted for 37% of the Roos' kills on the day, finishing with 19.
KEY MOMENTS
- S1 | Kansas City used five-straight kills early to jump out to a 6-2 lead. Brecka, Alli Schomers, Carly Gillen and De'Janae Arnold all threw across kills in the run.
- S1 | After the Leathernecks battled back, another kill by Brecka brought KC back within a point, 19-18.
- S1 | Bree Thompson came through with the kill that put the Roos up for good in the first set, taking a 22-21 lead.Â
- S2 | Western Illinois jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second set, but Raina Smith sent across a kill to right the ship.
- S2 | A block by Brecka and Arnold in the middle sparked a 6-to-0 run that would put Kansas City in front, 18-16.
- S2 | The Leathernecks were the first to 20, but an ace by Brecka tied things up and KC pulled away for the 2-0 lead.
- S3 | Back-to-back kills by Brecka capped a 7-to-1 run by the Roos, giving them a 8-4 lead.
- S3 | A kill by Gillen put an end to a 6-point run by WIU, and sparked a run for the Roos.
- S3 | KC won five of the final six points, including a solo block by Smith and a block assist by Arnold and Schomers to complete the sweep.
STATS TO NOTE
- Brecka was the only Roo to finish with double-digit kills, and also posted a team-high 18 digs to finish with her 10th double-double of the season.
- Brecka's 19 kills was her most since posting 20 against Memphis on Sept. 11.
- Schomers dished out 41 assists and 11 digs for her second-straight double-double and seventh of the year.
- Gillen finished with nine kills on just 15 attacks for .533 hitting. It is her third time this season hitting above-.400.
- Kansas City limited Western Illinois to .067 hitting and a 40% side-out rate in the third set.
