LINCOLN, Neb. -- Kansas City track and field competed at a high level this weekend, facing top-ranked teams in the nation in the 38-team field at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Individually, seven Roos posted PR's, while Josh Benford earned the lone medal.Â
A force this season on the track for the Roos on the women's team, Sommer Herner again impressed at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. Her mile time this weekend of 4:56.96 (PR) ranks first in the entire Western Athletic Conference, second in school history and earned her a sixth place finish. Having bested her mile time earlier this season of 4:57.13, she now owns the second and third best times in school history.Â
Another outstanding performance for the Roos this weekend on the track came from junior distance runner Katherine Hanners. She posted her PR in the 3000m with a time of 9:54.51, earning a seventh place finish. That run for Hanners ranks second-best in the WAC this season and third-best in school history.Â
"I was excited to have another opportunity to run fast this week and go under 10 (minutes) in the 3k for the first time," said Hanners. "Looking forward to working hard the next couple weeks before conference."
Also in the 3000m this weekend, sophomore Caroline Meyers posted her PR (10:09.54) placing 10th.Â
On the men's side, sophomore Sam Tudor finished with his PR in the 400m with a time of 48.88 (11th place finish). Tudor has been solid for the Roos all season in the 400m, earning three bronze medals this year. This weekend's run of 48.88 is the top-spot in the WAC this season.Â
"A really solid performance this weekend," said Tudor. "We just have to clean some things up for conference, but we're hoping for big things!"
Freshman Henry Dean (1:26.80 600m), Trey Seben (6.97 60m), and Benjamin Owere (13.27m triple jump) all notched PR's this weekend as well in their respective events.Â

Kansas City will have two more meets to get tuned up for the Conference Championship. The Roos will head to Pittsburg, Kan. next Friday and Saturday for the Pitt State Gorilla Classic.Â

"We saw a lot of progress this week," said head coach Benaud Shirley. " I'm very pleased with all the season best and personal records. We are three weeks away from the conference meet and I am very happy with the progress we are making."
Josh Benford, a transfer from Avila University, joined the Roos three weeks ago and has burst onto the scene at the Division I level. Remembering the high jump at the Missouri Intercollegiate last month that broke the school record (2.12m), Benford again showed that talent at the Husker Invitational this week with a jump of 2.10m. That mark earned him a silver medal. In the WAC this season, Benford owns the first-third best jumps in the high jump. The closest jumper to him this season in the conference is Utah Valley's Seth Krauss, who jumped a 2.05m.ÂA force this season on the track for the Roos on the women's team, Sommer Herner again impressed at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
