NORMAN, Okla. - The Kansas City women's tennis team (0-2) was without senior leader Yana Grechkina in today's match with Oklahoma (3-1), putting the Roos behind the eight ball from the jump in a 7-0 defeat.
"With Yana being out of the lineup we had to go with some new doubles teams, and again got a slow start," Head Coach Kendell Hale said. "In the singles a the girls are competing well, we just need more matches under our belt. It's tough to beat a team with six healthy girls, so I knew playing two matches down before you even step on the court against a Power Five team would be tough."
Without being able to field a third doubles team, the Sooners needed just one set over the Roos to take the point. Riddhi Sharma and Michela Xibilia competed together at the one doubles spot, falling 6-1.
At three singles, Thanushree Vale put up a first set fight, losing in a tiebreak, 7-6. She was unable to fight back from a break down in the second set, falling 6-3. Rhiannon McBlane showed promise in the five singles spot for the second match in a row, pushing the Sooners' Skyler Miller to the edge in both sets. In the end, Miller had the advantage, winning 6-4, 7-5.
The Roos will compete next weekend against Bradley, which currently sits at 1-2 on the season.
"We are just going to keep getting better and getting healthier," Hale said.
