"We saw some progress from last week," said head coach Benaud Shirley. "Nevertheless, we are not satisfied with where we are and will continue to work hard and make progress in the weeks to come."
For just the second time in the Roos' 10th annual Jayhawk Classic, a Roo athlete did not take gold. However, 11 top-five finishes marks the Roos' second-most top-five finishes this season. A total of 22 teams competed at the Jayhawk Classic hosted by the University of Kansas
At the Missouri Intercollegiate last week, an injury kept sophomore Sommer Herner from competing. This week, Herner took home silver in the 800m at the Jayhawk Classic with a PR time of 2:15.99. When healthy, Herner is a force to be reckoned with on the track. In every event she has competed in this season, she has finished top-two.Â
"Coming off a sprained ankle last week, I felt super lucky to have the opportunity to race in the 800m and bounce back," said Herner. "It was an exciting meet because it showed how much potential the team has in mid-January."
In the women's pentathlon, senior Chesney Walker came away with a-pair of top-five finishes. She competed in the 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, 800m dash, and the shot put. She earned two fourth-place finishes, one in the 800m (2:43.64) and one in the 60m hurdles (9.69).Â
Also on the women's side, senior Mara Meneely notched her first top-five finish in the field this season. She recorded a 3.05m jump, good enough for a fourth place finish.Â
On the men's side, junior Gevon Foreman recorded his PR in the weight throw (16.83). That mark earned him the third-place spot in the standings. A transfer from (NAIA) Madonna University in Michigan, Foreman has been a real bright spot for the Roos. At all three meets this season, he has finished top-three in the weight throw.Â
"16.83m was a nice PR, but there's still a lot of room to improve," Foreman said.Â
In the men's 400m dash, a duo of Roo athletes finished in the top-five. Last week, sophomore Sam Tudor finished third in the 400m at the Missouri Intercollegiate. He again notched a third place finish this week at the Classic with a time of 50.17, besting his time last week. Jaquez Perry, competing for the first time this season, finished right behind Tudor in the 400m with a time of 50.41. Last year at the WAC Indoor Championship, Perry finished second overall in the 400m. Starting to get healthy, look for Perry to make his mark this season on the track.Â
The men's and women's distance medley teams also notched top-five finishes, with the women placing third (12:30.16)Â and the men placing fifth (10.40.92).Â
Kansas City will be back in action next week when they head west to the Adidas Classic hosted by the University of Nebraska. This meet is a one-day event and will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 starting at 11:30 a.m.Â
