First Roo to Earn Award this Season After Hitting .500
Kansas City middle hitter Ty Lukes was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sep. 23-29, after averaging 3.5 kills per set on .500 hitting. The honor comes after the Roos swept both of their opponents to open conference play. They ran past CSU Bakersfield, led by Lukes's 10 kills on just 13 attacks, which was good for a .615 hitting percentage. They followed up that performance with a sweep of California Baptist in which Lukes added another 11 kills.
"We're excited and grateful for Ty being regonized as WAC Offensive Player of the Week," Head Coach Christi Posey said. "She'd be the first one to credit the team and specifically Alli Schomers, our setter, for helping her put together a consistent performance of offensive efficiency through the last couple of weeks."
The performances bumped Lukes's season hitting percentage from .366 up to .387, good for second in the WAC. This is her first Player of the Week honor this season, after earning First Team All-WAC honors in 2018 and receiving WAC Preseason Player of the Year honors this year. She is currently averaging 2.7 kills per set and 3.1 points per set while leading the team in hitting percentage.
Kansas City prepares to match up with conference leading Grand Canyon tonight at 7 p.m. in the Swinney Center. It will set up a head-to-head between the Lukes and the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, Klaire Mitchell. Mitchell garnered the award after digging up 6.0 digs per set in the Lopes' sweep of Chicago State.
