KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Women's Soccer (6-1-2) team pitched a second-half shutout as the Roos hung on for a 2-1 win at Tulsa (5-4-0) tonight at Hurricane Soccer Stadium. The victory marks the first for the Roos in the all-time series with Tulsa and also is the first contest Kansas City has scored a goal -- Tulsa had won the previous two meetings with the last coming in 2014.
"This was a gritty performance by our soccer family tonight to go on the road and get a a victory against a quality side and program like Tulsa University," said head coach Chris Cissell. "We had 18 players who saw time and contribute to tonight's great win. We will relax and recover tomorrow and get ready to get back after it again on Sunday at Oral Roberts."
Sophomore All-American Rylan Childers wasted little time after the opening whistle to stake the Roos to a 1-0 lead. In the sixth minute, she used a feed from Amanda Sampson to nail her conference-leading fifth goal of the year. Those two points were the 49th and 50th career points in just her sophomore season. She later added an assist to give her 51 total.
In the 29th minute, senior Halle Hamilton dribbled up the left side and kicked in her third goal of the year. The assist was credited to Childers.
Prior to the half, Tulsa's Emilie Torres found a hole in the Roos defense and cut the deficit in half. In the 34th minute, Kansas City led by a 2-1 count.
The Kansas City defense locked down the Golden Hurricane offense in the final 45 minutes and ended up with the 2-1 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Roth improved to 3-1-1 on the year, posting a season-tying five saves in the winning effort.
