KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Men's Soccer picked up its second straight Western Athletic Conference win today, this time at home against UT Rio Grande Valley by a score of 2-1. That win moves Kansas City to 3-7-0 (2-3-0 WAC) on the season.Â
"Our guys really played well," head coach Rick Benben said. "We couldn't have had a better weekend than we did. To get two wins on the week will give us some confidence moving forward."
On a beautiful day at Durwood Soccer Stadium, forward Ryan Khedoo (1 goal, 1 assist) and GK Filippo Errico (10 saves) notched career bests for Kansas City. That goal marked Khedoo's second on the week, having previously scored the game winner Friday night vs. Incarnate Word in 2OT. Errico made an incredible game winning save with five seconds remaining in the game to seal the win (watch save here).
It was a thriller 'till the end here in Kansas City, but the Roos walked away victorious and keep a perfect 5-0 record vs. UTRGV all time at home.Â
In the first half, UTRGV's Kyle Edwards struck first off of a penalty kick in the 8th minute. Roos MF Antoine Precheur fouled the attacking Vaquero in the box. Preseason All-WAC selection, Edwards, knocked home the goal for the 1-0 lead. Â
From that point on, the Roos took control of the game. In the 21st minute, junior transfer Ryan Khedoo knocked home the equalizer off of a rebound shot from Jordan Salt. GK Filippo Errico shut down six attempts from the Vaqueros to keep the game leveled at 1-1 heading into halftime.Â
The second half was a defensive battle. Just 53 seconds into the half, the Vaqueros put a shot on open net. GK Errico was pulled up to stop the attack, but Ryan Khedoo laid out and made the team save to keep the game even. F Mikhail McComie then buried what would become the game winning goal in the 67th minute to give the Roos a 2-1 lead. Khedoo was all over the field, as he crossed a beautiful ball into the box for McComie to volley one into the back of the net. Khedoo finished with a career best one goal and one assist on the night.Â
Kansas City was trying to run the clock out on UTRGV in the closing minutes to pick up the win. With just seven seconds remaining, Kansas City was whistled for a foul right outside the box to set up a free kick for the Vaqueros. Set piece specialist Arthur Rodgers for UTRGV lined up the shot, but was denied on a beautiful diving save from Filippo Errico.Â
UTRGV led in every category besides one, saves. It was GK Filippo Errico that made the difference in the net, as he turned away all but one of the 12 shots on goal. UTRGV outshot Kansas City by a total of 19 (12 on goal) to the Roos 9 (4 on goal). However, the Roos converted on 50 percent of its shots on goal, notching two goals on four shots on target.Â
