UMKC Drops Close Match to Marquette, 5-2

OMAHA, Neb. – UMKC men's tennis (8-7) showed tremendous fight in a 5-2 loss vs. Marquette (12-4) on Saturday afternoon. The Roos earned victories at the No. 1 and No. 4 singles positions.
Airam Castellano (Gran Canaria, Spain) outlasted Alvaro Verdu in a thriller on the No. 1 court, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Tom Kruse (Flensburg, Germany) defeated Nick Dykema 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 in another 3-set action-packed No. 4 contest.
Uldis Gaismins (Riga, Latvia) fell 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 to Luke Smrek in the No. 2 match. Amaury Navette (Paris, France) was beaten 6-3, 7-6 by Greg Anderson in No. 3 action. Vinh Pham (Lenexa, Kan.) dropped a 6-1, 6-4 contest to Kristiyan Trukov in No. 5 play. Daniel Izadifar (Tonsberg, Norway) came up short, 6-4, 6-0 on the No. 6 court.
Gaismins and Navette were beaten 7-6 by Verdu and Dykema in No. 1 doubles. Castellano and Izadifar fell 6-1 in the No. 2 match. Pham and Kruse were down 6-5 when Marquette clinched the doubles point.
UMKC returns to WAC competition on April 8-9 vs. New Mexico State and Chicago State in Seattle, Washington.
