MARTIN, Tenn. – In a game that featured five freshmen in the starting lineup, the UMKC women's soccer team outlasted UT Martin 2-0 to grab its first victory of the 2016 campaign on Sunday afternoon.
The 'Roos (1-3-2) really showed their aggression on the field and persistency to score, outshooting the Skyhawks (1-4-0) 22-13.
“Today was a really good team effort,” UMKC head coach Chris Cissell said. “We started five freshmen, and felt like we were here with only 17 healthy bodies. I felt that everyone who came off the bench played really well as well.”
Through the help of junior forward Kara Priest (Overland Park, Kan.) who recorded the assist on the play, junior midfielder Sydni Young (O'Fallon, Mo.) knocked in her first goal of the season in the 34th minute of the first half, helping the 'Roos jump out to a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, UMKC continued its team play and shared the ball well, which resulted in another goal and increasing the score the 2-0 in the 55th minute. As a result of two assists from junior forwards Nikki Lynch (Leawood, Kan.) and Lilly Cobb (Glen Carbon, Ill.), freshman midfielder Sammi Arch (Overland Park, Kan.) was able to punch in her first-career goal on the play.
On the defensive side of the field, freshman goalkeeper Erin Roth (Eureka, Mo.) made her first start of the season, where she also posted her first career shutout, saving a total of five shots on the day.
Up next for UMKC, the 'Roos will come back home on Sunday, Sept. 11 to take on the Kansas Jayhawks at Durwood Stadium. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT.
