
UMKC Topped By South Dakota, 3-0

VERMILLION, S.D. – UMKC volleyball was unable to take a set in their Thursday evening match against South Dakota, falling 3-0 in Vermillion, S.D.
The 'Roos (2-2) fell in the first set 25-18, battling with the Coyotes (4-1) the length of the set, but were unable to take control despite their best efforts.
UMKC fell behind to South Dakota in set two, trailing by as much as seven at 16-9, but the 'Roos pulled together to battle back within one at 19-18. The comeback fell just short, however, as USD pulled away from UMKC to take set two 25-21.
The 'Roos hung tough with South Dakota at the inception of set three, tying the score at six, before the Coyotes went on a 14-3 run, taking the 20-9 advantage, and the hole was too much for UMKC to get out of, eventually falling 25-16.
Freshman Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led UMKC with 11 kills with a team-high 40 attempts, while junior Devan Porter (Bettendorf, Iowa) tallied seven kills, leading the team with a .333 hitting percentage, and adding 10 digs. Brianna Starr (Blue Springs, Mo.) tallied a career-high 17 digs to aid the UMKC defense.
UMKC gets back on the court on Friday, Sept. 2 as they face Abilene Christian in the opening match of the Omaha Classic. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. CT.
