NORMAN, Okla. – Coming off a season-opening sweep of UTEP on Friday night, UMKC volleyball posted a sweep of Oral Roberts on Saturday morning, before falling to the Oklahoma Sooners to finish the Oklahoma Invitational 2-1. Seniors Kaylyn Brandt (Sumner, Iowa) and Emma Hagedorn (Parkville, Mo.) were named to the All-Tournament team.
Freshman Alicia Harrington (Cedar Falls, Iowa) led the attack for UMKC (2-1) against Oral Roberts (0-2) with 13 kills, while Hagedorn hit .615 with nine kills and five blocks (one solo, four assists). Brandt tallied 29 assists, while fellow senior Brianna Starr (Blue Springs, Mo.) notched 10 digs to help lead UMKC to the sweep of the Golden Eagles.
The 'Roos hit .548 as a team in the first set of the day and cruised to a 10-point advantage at 19-9, but ORU battled back to bring it within six at 23-17, but UMKC's efficient offense was too much to handle for the Golden Eagles, and the 'Roos took the set 25-19.
UMKC never trailed the rest of the match, hitting .526 in set two and holding Oral Roberts to a .042 hitting percentage in the set, and despite hitting just .281 as a team in set three, the Kangaroo defense was able to hold the Golden Eagles to a negative hitting efficiency (-.050) in the final frame to seal the victory.
In the second match of the day, the Sooners jumped out to a 10-6 lead, but UMKC went on a 7-1 run to take the lead at 13-11. From there Oklahoma scored six straight points to regain the lead and never looked back in the set, winning 25-17.
The Sooners scored seven-straight points to open the second set, and despite UMKC's best efforts, OU led the entire set to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The 'Roos weren't ready to call it quits, and gave Oklahoma everything they had in the third set. UMKC got down 14-7, but rattled off six-straight points to pull within one. The two duked it out, going back and forth for a few points until the Blue and Gold scored four-straight, taking advantage of two OU errors to take a 21-18 lead. Each team scored a point after that, then the Sooners leveled the score at 22 with three-straight points. UMKC took it to match point at 24-23 with a kill from senior Madison Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.), her 10th of the game, but Oklahoma rattled off three consecutive points to finish the set and win the match 3-0.
Mosier's 10 kills led UMKC, while Brandt tallied 35 assists, and Starr recorded a season-high 14 digs.
UMKC travels to Vermillion, South Dakota on Sept. 1 to face South Dakota, before heading back down I-29 to Omaha to take on Abilene Christian, Drake and UNO in the Omaha Classic, Sept. 2 and 3.
