UMKC Splits Doubleheader with Omaha

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UMKC softball team bounced back from a 15-2 game one loss to Omaha, to trump the Mavericks 10-5 in game two of the doubleheader on Monday, May 2 at Missouri 3&2 Field in Kansas City, Missouri.
The 'Roos (22-23) were outhit in game one of the midweek doubleheader 16-6 by Omaha (29-24) and were only able to muster two runs in the contest, and RBI single from senior Alexandra Friloux (1-for-2) in the second inning, and an RBI groundout from senior Katie Kelley (1-for-3).
A nine-run fifth inning from the Mavs played a major factor in the outcome, as Kelley took the loss in the circle to move to 8-12 on the season, as the 'Roos fell in five innings, 15-2.
Game two held better fortunes for the 'Roos as they were able to jump ahead early with a two-run first inning.
Kelley (0-for-3) executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to score the game's first run, driving in senior Brooke Parker (2-for-4) who reached on an infield single to lead off the game. Later in the inning, redshirt freshman Rachel Pate (1-for-3) drove in a run with a double down the right field line to give UMKC the 2-0 lead.
Omaha bounced back for three runs in the second, and each team hung zeros in the third and fourth innings before the Mavs added another run in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
The 'Roos didn't back down and rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning off four hits and an error. Parker drove in two runs with a double and sophomore Ashlin O'Brien (3-for-4) added two RBIs to her name with a single up the middle, giving UMKC a 7-4 lead.
UMKC added on three more runs in the sixth inning off five hits, including an RBI single to centerfield from junior Kelsey Volle (1-for-2) and a single to right field from junior Alex Gale to drive in the the 'Roos 10th run of the game and take a six-run lead heading into the last inning.
Sophomore pitcher Amber Grove picked up the complete game win after giving up one run in the seventh, striking out three batters and walking just one to move to 13-9 on the season.
UMKC is back in action on Friday, May 6 as they host IUPUI for a three-game series at Missouri 3&2 Field. Friday's doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. and Saturday's finale is slated for a noon first pitch.
