(Bakersfield, Calif.) - UMKC had to fight from behind the entire night, and got to within six in the final four minutes, but in the end CSU Bakersfield took a 77-66 victory Thursday at the Icardo Center.
The opening half was about as even as it could get, save one statistical category, turnovers. UMKC (9-14, 2-6 WAC) gave the ball away 10 times, while CSUB (16-7, 6-2 WAC) only made three miscues. The result was CSUB taking a 9-0 lead in points off turnovers, and a 35-27 scoring advantage at the half.
Dashawn King led the Roos with eight points at the break, while Dedrick Basile was the leader for the Runners with 11. UMKC shot 46 percent, while CSUB hit 47 percent in the period.
The second period was a foul-fest, with both teams in the bonus after the first 10 minutes of play. In all, there were 28 fouls called in the second half.
CSU Bakersfield got off to a quick start in the second half, pushing its lead to 14 after the first four minutes of play. The Roos continued to battle though, chipping away at the lead and getting it down to six at 51-45 with 10:34 on the clock after a Shayok Shayok fastbreak layup.
Each time UMKC got it to six though, CSUB would answer. UMKC couldn't get enough stops in the stanza to make the Runners sweat. Two Martez Harrison free throws with 3:43 left got the score back down to six after it got to 11 a few possessions earlier, but again the Roadrunners answered. Basile hit a three from the corner on the next possession to put it out of reach, and the Runners hit their free throws down the stretch to seal it.
CSUB hit 61 percent in the second half, and did most of the damage in the paint, out-scoring the Roos 44-26 inside. The Runners also had a 20-2 advantage in fast break points. For the game, UMKC had 7 assists and 15 turnovers, while CSUB had 17 assists and 10 turnovers.
Harrison scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half to lead UMKC, while King and Shayok each tallied 10 points. Basile led four CSUB players in double figures with 20 points.
UMKC will continue the road trip on Saturday night when it faces Seattle at 9 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on the American Sports Network, locally in Kansas City on KSMO.
