
Roos Fall to Omaha at Municipal Auditorium, 80-57

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women's basketball was unable to extend its winning-streak to five games on Saturday afternoon, falling to Omaha, 80-57, on Kansas City Day at Municipal Auditorium.
The Roos (5-4) fell behind early and never led against the Mavericks (5-5). Omaha jumped out to a 15-point lead at the end of the first, shooting 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from the floor in the opening 10 minutes, including knocking down three-of-seven three-point attempts. UMKC shot just 20 percent (3-for-15) in the opening period, with junior forward Kiana Law (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scoring four points on two-for-five shooting.
Omaha kept their foot on the pedal, outscoring UMKC 24-16 in the second quarter, giving the Mavs a 23-point lead at half. The UMKC defense didn't have an answer for Omaha's attack, as the Mavs shot 75 percent (6-for-8) in the second quarter, including hitting three-of-three shots from deep and nine-of-12 free throw attempts. The Roos improved their shooting percentage slightly, knocking down 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from the field. Law added four points to her total to have eight at the half, and redshirt sophomore Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) tabbed five points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Roos put together their best 10 minutes of basketball coming out of the half, nearly doubling the Mavs' third quarter output. Graduate transfer Lyndsay Leikem (Tucson, Ariz.) scored five points in the quarter, knocking down both of her field goal attempts, including a three to cut the lead to 16, the lowest total since the 7:38 mark in the first quarter. UMKC continued to chip away at the Omaha lead, and cut the lead to 14 to start the fourth quarter.
With 9:03 remaining in the fourth, senior guard Ceidra Coleman (Bryan, Texas) hit one-of-two free throws to trim the lead to 13. That total was the lowest since the 9:04 mark in the first quarter, and was the lowest it would be the rest of the game. Omaha shot 41.7 percent (5-for-12) in the final quarter, and knocked down all-eight of the its free throws to pull away from the Roos, outscoring UMKC 20-11 in the final quarter.
Law finished the day with a team-high 12 points and added four rebounds, and Moore finished with nine points and four boards. Coleman grabbed a team-high five rebounds and added six points, and junior Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) scored eight points.
UMKC gets back on the hardwood on Monday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. CT against Southern Illinois as part of the 2016 Roo Holiday Classic at Swinney Recreation Center. The Roos will face Northern Illinois on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 3:30 p.m. to conclude the Roo Holiday Classic.
