KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women's basketball junior guard Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) was scorching-hot from the field on Monday night, scoring a career-high 37 points on 15-for-25 shooting, including six threes, but the Roos fell to Southern Illinois 77-69.
Waldron and the Roos (5-5) got out to a quick start, leading the Salukis (6-4) 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. Waldron had eight points after the first 10 minutes, shooting three-of-seven from the field. Redshirt junior India Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) notched all-six of her points in the opening quarter.
The Roos kept the pedal to the floor in the second quarter, scoring 19 points to SIU's 11, with Waldron keeping the pace with nine points to total 17 in the first half. UMKC out-rebounded the Salukis 22-15 in the first 20 minutes, and led SIU by 14, 37-23, at the intermission.
The Salukis came out of the half looking to get back in the game, and outscored UMKC 24-18 in the third quarter to cut the lead to eight. Waldron continued to score in buckets, knocking down two threes and five total field goals in the third, scoring 13 of UMKC's 18.
Aiding the SIU cause, UMKC grabbed just four rebounds in the third quarter, with the Salukis tallying 14 boards, and that trend continued into the fourth quarter. SIU out-rebounded the Roos 23-7 in the second half alone, and despite Waldron scoring another seven points, SIU came out on top 77-69.
Waldron's 37 points ties for 16th this season om the NCAA Division I single-game charts.
The Roos look to bounce back tomorrow in the Roo Holiday Classic finale, playing Northern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. CT.
