KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women's soccer went into double overtime for the second-straight contests, and third of the season on Sunday, earning a 1-1 draw against New Mexico State at Durwood Stadium.
UMKC (4-7-3, 1-0-1 WAC) dominated the possession in the first half, and outshot the Aggies (4-9-1, 1-0-1 WAC) 14-3, including 6-1 in shots on goal. Unfortunately for the Roos, NMSU's lone shot on goal was an equalizer in the 42nd minute to level the score at 1-1.
UMKC scored the opening goal in the match six minutes prior to the NMSU equalizer, thanks to the first goal of the season from sophomore Ryann Burnett (Wichita, Kan.). Burnett was assisted on the play by sophomore Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.), her first of the season as well.
The Roos continued to pound the ball into the attacking third in the second half, outshooting New Mexico State 11-1 in the second period, including a 2-1 shots on goal margin. The Aggies' defense stay strong, and the two teams remained tied at one at the end of regulation.
UMKC took eight shots in the first overtime, including four on goal, but the NMSU goalkeeper kept the game from ending, stopping each one. The second overtime was the only period that the Aggies outshot UMKC (2-1) but it didn't matter as neither team was able to score and the match ended knotted at one.
The Roos took a season-high 34 shots, including 12 on goal, with Mothershead taking a team-high nine shots with two on goal. Junior forward Kara Priest (Overland Park, Kan.) recorded seven shots with a team best three on goal. Goalkeeper Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) faced just two shots on goal, the 42nd minute goal and a second half save to keep the Aggies from taking the lead.
UMKC is back in action on Friday, Oct. 14, as they host Grand Canyon at 8 p.m. CT at Durwood Stadium.
