KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three games into the 2016 Western Athletic Conference schedule, UMKC women's soccer has yet to play a league game that didn't go to two overtimes. The Roos battled Grand Canyon for 110 minutes, but a winner could not be determined as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
UMKC (4-7-4, 1-0-2 WAC) outshot the Lopes (5-8-1, 1-1-1 WAC) 15-8, including a 9-2 shots on goal advantage, but were unable to send one home to break the scoreless game.
In the first half, UMKC registered eight shots to GCU's two, six of which forced the Lopes' keeper to make a stop, but none were closer than a 44th-minute penalty kick from sophomore Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.). After a GCU knocked down a Roo in the box, UMKC was awarded the penalty kick, and head coach Chris Cissell elected to have Childers take the shot. The sophomore took a gorgeous shot that looked to be tucked perfectly inside the right post, but GCU's Blakely Fraasch made an outstanding save to keep the Roos off the board, and both teams went into intermission knotted at zero.
The Roos put six shots up in the second half with two on goal, and the Lopes were able to register just three attempts, but forced sophomore goalkeeper Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) to make a save. Lillig would go on to save one more shot, what would have been the game-winner in the second overtime, but picked up her third shutout of the season.
Childers and fellow sophomore Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) led the Roos with three shots each. Mothershead and junior Nikki Lynch (Leawood, Kan.) each registered two shots on goal, while Childers, seniors Emily Herndon (Overland Park, Kan.), Niekie Pellens (Naarden, Netherlands), and freshmen Halle Hamilton (Lincoln, Neb.) and Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) each put one shot on goal.
UMKC is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16, facing CSU Bakersfield at 1 p.m. CT at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
