KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UMKC women's soccer picked up a 3-0 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at Durwood Stadium. Junior Lilly Cobb (Glen Carbon, Ill.) scored two of the Roos' goals, and senior Niekie Pellens (Naarden, Netherlands) tallied two assists in the win.
UMKC (5-7-4, 2-0-2 WAC) opened the scoring in the 37th minute, as Pellens sent a perfect corner into the box near the far post where UMKC had three players with a look. Freshman Abby Small (Kansas City, Mo.) took advantage of the perfect pass, tapping it home for her second goal of the season, and UMKC went into halftime with a 1-0 lead over CSU Bakersfield (6-9-1, 2-2-0 WAC)
The Roos opened the second half with a bang, as Cobb knocked in her first goal of the game in the 48th minute. Senior Emily Herndon (Overland Park, Kan.) found Cobb on the right side nearing the penalty box, and with just the goalkeeper to beat, Cobb sent the ball far post into the back of the net, giving the Roos the 2-0 lead.
UMKC wasn't done there, and neither was Cobb for that matter. UMKC earned a corner in the 53rd minute, and Pellens lined up on the far side to take the kick. Cobb, waiting in the middle of the box, settled the pass and put a rocket of a shot on goal, and after a ricochet off the CSUB keeper, she rebounded to score her second of the game.
The score would stand from there, giving the Roos the 3-0 victory and keeping them undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play.
The Roos are back on the pitch on Oct. 20 in Seattle, Washington, where they will face Seattle U at 9 p.m. CT.
