
Women Take First While Men Grab Fourth at ESU Relays

(Emporia, Kan. / Stanford, Ca.) – Friday night at the Stanford Invitational, senior Courtney Frerichs ran a career best as well as earned a first place finish in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase with her final time of 9:49.06 minutes. Not only does this rank her first in the WAC by well over a minute, but also resets her previous record for UMKC's women's steeplechase. Over in Emporia, Kan. at the ESU Relays, there were 21 Kangaroos who finished in the top three of their event. The women's team placed first out of the fourteen teams with 181 points, while the men came in fourth out of twelve teams with a total of 91 points.
Starting Saturday off in the short sprints, Kenny Roach and Daniel Prioleau both finished in the top five for the men's 100m dash, each coming in fourth and fifth place with a time of 10.86 seconds. This was a career best for Roach. On the women's side, Traci Mills, Lynette Cottingham, and Michelle Momo blazed one after another across the finish line taking second, third, and fourth place, respectively. Mills ran a career best of 12.12 (second in WAC) as Cottingham finished in 12.15 seconds (third in WAC).
Representing the Blue and Gold in the women's 200m dash was junior, Chantel Bethune, coming in second place with her time of 25.09—a career best and fifth in the WAC. Genel Rollins finished in fourth with 25.40 seconds.
Bethune grabbed first place in the women's 400m as well, clocking the lap in 56.52 seconds—third in WAC. Senior, Briana Carter followed in second with a 56.69 finish which also ranks fifth in the WAC. On the men's side, freshman Eric Yarbrough crossed the finish line at 49.21 seconds to earn second place.
Having top five finishers in the men's 3000m run were youngins, Nathan Keown with 8:44.47 (2nd), Jason Fambrough with 8:48.32 (3rd), and Quinlan Moll 8:53.42 (4th)—all running season bests. Likewise, for the women, Kelly Carpenter finished second with her time of 10:29.50 and Chandler Carreon in third with a 10:33.70 finish.
Bryce Miller proved beastly again as he took first place in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with his time clocking in at 8:56.12—a career best and breaking the UMKC school record again. This time also ranks him first in the WAC standing by well over ten seconds.
Running the double laps, Janelle Johnson and Elizabeth Nolke crossed the finish line in second and fourth place, respectively, in the women's 800m. Johnson finished in 2:19.21, while Nolke ran a career best with 2:21.01.
The 'Roos continued to get after it in the hurdles as Zak Snow and Terrone Garner came in second and third place, correspondingly, with times of 53.81 and 55.04 seconds. Snow's time has him sitting third in the WAC for the men's 400-meter hurdles. For the women, Amani Borders clutched a second place finish with her final time of 1:05.01, as Veronica Rollins finished in fourth with 1:05.22.
Mallory Short took first place in the women's 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line at 14.20—a career best, third all-time for UMKC, and currently second in the WAC.
After having a successful performance last weekend, Blake Hocking continued to amaze spectators as he yet again set the UMKC record for the men's outdoor shot. This time he launched the shot put 18.08m—almost to the sixty foot mark. Hocking placed second in shot but is now sitting first in the WAC.
In the sandpits, Jeremy Harr came in fifth in the men's triple jump with his mark of 14.06m—a career best and fifth in the conference.
For the women's long jump, Traci Mills finished in fourth with her leap of 5.68m while Michelle Momo came in fifth with 5.59m.
Ranking in the top five of the UMKC record books, Lynette Cottingham triple jumped her career best with 11.73m to earn second place—now sits fifth in the conference.
Making a name for herself in the field events, senior Dahlia Dyson finished in the top five for the women's shot put, discus, and hammer throw. In the shot put, Dyson finished fourth with a toss of 13.26m (fourth in WAC). For the discus, she earned fifth place with a mark of 43.29m (third in WAC), while in the hammer she came in second with a force of 50.23m—now third in WAC. Yasmin Musaddiq took fifth place in the hammer with her toss of 47.86m.
Both of the men's and women's teams finished third in the 4x100m relays, with times of 42.09 and 48.03, respectively.
