'Roos Close Regular Season, Set Records with 6-1 Victory Over Bearcats

(Maryville, Mo.) - The UMKC men's tennis squad finished the regular season on Thursday against a nationally ranked Division II school in Northwest Missouri State, and took home a 6-1 victory, as well as some school records.
UMKC (12-11) continued its dominant doubles season, taking wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the point. In the process, the No. 2 duo of Andrey Smirnov and Uldis Gaismins picked up their 19th wins of the year, breaking the single-season doubles win mark.
In singles action, UMKC took some tough matches against the 19th ranked Bearcats (12-6), getting a three-set wins at No. 1 from Airam Castellano, and at No. 4 from Gaismins. Smirnov won in straight sets at No. 2 to continue his hot play.
After the 'Roos got up by a 4-1 score from their production at 1-4, they were leading in the No. 5 and 6 matches, up a set and leading in the second, the Bearcats conceded both to make the final margin 6-1.
The singles wins by Castellano and Conner Edwards were their 19th of the year, tying the school record set by Grant Fleming.
UMKC will host the WAC Championships next week at the Plaza Tennis Center. They will be the No. 3 seed and get a bye to the semifinals on Saturday against No. 2 UTPA.
