LAWRENCE, Kan. – UMKC plated nine runs over the final four innings to hand Eastern Michigan a 9-4 defeat on Saturday.
The 'Roos (14-14) rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the third inning after back-to-back singles by Katie Kelley and Caitlin Christopher and a Marlee Maples walk loaded the bases for Kelsey Goodwin. Goodwin delivered a 2 RBI double to left-centerfield. One batter later, Alex Friloux followed Goodwin's extra base hit with a 2 RBI double of her own, plating Maples and Goodwin, and UMKC had a 4-1 lead it would never relinquish.
Kelsey Leach led off the home half of the fourth inning with a walk, followed by a Bri Wyatt single to put two aboard. Two batters later, Christopher reached on a two-out error that allowed Leach to score. Maples followed with a 2 RBI single and the 'Roos took a five run lead into the fifth inning.
Eastern Michigan responded with a pair of runs in the visitor's half of the fifth, but Kelley plated a run with a RBI single in the home half, and Friloux drove in another with a RBI groundout in the sixth, to push the margin back to five.
The insurance was more than enough for Kenzie Flaws. Flaws, pitching in relief, allowed just three hits over three shutout innings while striking out one. Cinda Ramos earned the victory after scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs while walking a batter and striking out a batter over the game's first four innings.
The Eagles and Kangaroos will meet once more on Sunday at 1 p.m.
