LAWRENCE, Kan. – Amber Grove struck out nine batters in a complete game effort to lead UMKC to a 7-2 victory over Eastern Michigan in the teams' second meeting in as many days on Sunday.
UMKC landed the knockout punch in the top of the first inning. The 'Roos strung together four straight singles to begin the game, the first and second by Cinda Ramos and Bri Wyatt, respectively, put runners aboard for Katie Kelley who drove in a run with a base hit of her own. After Christopher singled to load the bases, Marlee Maples drove in Wyatt with a sacrifice fly. Kelsey Goodwin followed Maples with a 2 RBI double to left-centerfield and the 'Roos were rolling. One batter later, Alex Friloux roped a RBI double of her own and UMKC led 5-0.
The 'Roos added some unneeded insurance in the fifth inning after Maples and Goodwin reached base to set the table for Friloux. The junior from Ama, La., responded by driving in her second run of the game with a sacrifice fly. One batter later, Aly Zembruski did the same to cap the scoring for UMKC.
Grove did not allow a run through the game's first four innings before relenting in the fifth. In all, the freshman faced just 27 batters, surrendering only two walks and scattering four hits.
The 'Roos will embark upon their spring break road trip this week with games scheduled to be played in Santa Clara, Calif., and Moraga, Calif., before UMKC begins conference play at Bakersfield next weekend.
