LAWRENCE, Kan. – UMKC rallied late but was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to No. 22 Kansas 5-2 in the second game of a doubleheader at the Rock Chalk Classic on Saturday. The 'Roos (13-14) suffered a 10-2 loss to Georgia State in the early contest.
The Jayhawks took a 4-0 lead before UMKC returned fire with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to cut the deficit in half. The comeback fell short, however, as KU plated a run in the home half of the sixth and held the 'Roos scoreless in the final stanza.
Katie Kelley tossed a six-inning complete game for UMKC, allowing two earned runs on five hits and striking out four while walking three.
Caitlin Christopher led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to put the 'Roos on the board. Kelley followed a Cinda Ramos double with a RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to a pair.
UMKC jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning of its first game versus Georgia State but the relative success was short-lived, as the Panthers answered with three runs in the home half, and poured in another seven runs in the third inning to put the game away.
Ramos and Marlee Maples each drove in runs with RBI doubles in the first inning.
UMKC will face Eastern Michigan on Saturday and Sunday to conclude tournament play for the 2015 regular season.
