(Kansas City, Mo.) - UMKC controlled most of the ball and had most of the chances on Saturday afternoon at Durwood Stadium, but a late Drake goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 loss.
The 'Roos (1-4-1) jumped out with several early opportunities, including a pair from senior forward Jordan Rideout. His first came in the fourth minute on a through ball into the box, but his rocket attempt sailed just wide on the near post. He had another chance in the 21st minute when senior Tato Chiaparro put a cross in that saw Rideout open on the six yard box, but the header attempt was saved by DU (2-4-1) goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod.
A long run by redshirt freshman Wes White in the 26th minute nearly put UMKC in the lead, but after he beat three defenders on the run and cut inside for a shot, it was again saved by MacLeod. Michael Oakley got his head on a cross off a corner kick in the 43rd minute, but MacLeod tipped it over the bar.
Kansas City went into the break with an 8-1 shot advantage, but a 0-0 score line.
The second half was more closely played, but UMKC again had the majority of the chances. In the 53rd minute, senior Sylvester Yiadom took a shot on a through ball in the box, but it was saved by DU again.
The best chance of the game came in the 71st minute though, when Chiaparro got a through ball 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, but his one-touch shot was wide of the net.
Drake had a pair of good chances in the half, and took advantage of one; a UMKC misplay in the back to score in the 85th minute. Ben Lemay made a deep run into the box, and got between two Roo defenders to tap a free ball past UMKC goalkeeper Chris McGaughey.
McGaughey was forced to make only one save in the game, but it was a good one as he stopped a shot by Drake leading scorer James Wypych in the 66th minute.
UMKC out-shot the guests 14-5 in the game, but failed to score for the third straight game. Rideout led the way with six of the UMKC shots, while the total of 14 was a team season-high.
The Kangaroos will stay home to face Central Arkansas on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
