(Kansas City, Mo.) - UMKC men's soccer put together its third straight performance with numerous scoring opportunities, and picked up a 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas on Tuesday night at Durwood Stadium, while turning in their first shutout of 2014.
UMKC (2-4-1) took control early against the Bears (2-4), getting a chance in the sixth minute when senior Tato Chiaparro hit a shot from a tough angle that was blocked up over the goal by the UCA keeper. On the ensuing corner kick, Chiaparro found redshirt freshman Wes White on the front post for a header that found the back of the net, his first career goal (seventh minute). It was the first lead to start a game this season, as the 'Roos came from behind for their other victory.
White would prove to be a pest for the Bears all night, taking four shots, all on goal. In the half UMKC out-shot the Bears 6-3, with UCA looking dangerous only on free kicks, but both times he was asked, goalkeeper Chris McGaughey came up with the save.
In the final half, the game opened up with more space, but so did the physical play, with 19 in the final stanza alone. The Bears were also cautioned three times.
The 'Roos next scoring opportunity came in the 64th minute when White struck a free kick from 25 yards out that went toward the upper left corner of the net, but UCA goalkeeper Harrison Veith make a huge save to keep his squad in the game.
In the 84th minute, White tried to return the favor to Chiaparro when he played a through ball into the box, but Veith came out and stopped the attempt, and after a scramble, UCA was able to clear it.
The 'Roos final chance came in the 89th minute from White, who hit one from the right side on frame, but again Veith was up to the task with a save.
UMKC finished the contest with a 12-6 shot lead, including a 7-4 advantage with shots on goal. McGaughey recorded his third career shutout and first of the year, making four saves on the night.
Kansas City will not play again until next Tuesday when it heads to fifth-ranked Creighton for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Omaha, Neb.
