(St. Louis, Mo.) - The UMKC men's soccer squad played right with the No. 20/15 Saint Louis Billikens, but in the end it was a 2-0 victory for the home side on Tuesday night.
UMKC (1-3-1) nearly got on the board first in the contest as senior Jordan Rideout had a flurry of opportunities in the eighth minute. He hit a shot that was saved by Saint Louis (5-1) goalkeeper Sascha Otte, and had another blocked. Rideout had a header chance in the 14th minute as well, but again Otte was up to the task for the save.
The Billikens actually didn't have a shot attempt until the 27th minute of the game, but it ended in a goal. Kingsley Bryce took a pass from the right side by David Graydon, and struck a shot into the left corner to make it 1-0.
SLU ended up taking five shots in the half, but neither team could score the rest of the way. UMKC took a 6-5 shot advantage into the break, but only one of the Billikens attempts were on frame.
The second stanza saw UMKC continue to create chances, with Rideout being denied again in the 52nd minute by an Otte save. Missouri-Kansas City goalkeeper Chris McGaughey made his first save of the night in the 54th minute, and finished with three in the game.
Didrik Rinde got in on the offensive action for the 'Roos in the 70th minute, but again Otte made the save to keep the 1-0 lead. The Billikens tallied the clincher in the 76th minute though against the run of play, getting a goal from leading scorer Robert Kristo on a flick to make it 2-0.
UMKC never gave up though, and had more opportunities down the stretch, including the seventh shot of the game from Rideout, who matched a career-high with the effort.
The final shot count was 15-12 in favor of SLU, with a 6-5 advantage in shots on frame. The 12 shots was a season-high for UMKC as a team as well.
The 'Roos will head home to face Drake on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Durwood Stadium.
