Women's Basketball Off-Season - Best Basketball Memory: Paige Husa
Although I've had so many great opportunities and experiences through the game of basketball, one sticks out in my mind as the greatest. This past year, my high school team found much success on the court. This was due to the friendships we had built off the court. It's hard to put into words how much these girls meant to me during my senior year, but somehow I hope this experience will illustrate it.
It was the district final game, and although our record was sound, we knew this could be our last game if we didn't receive the wild-card into the state tournament. We laced up our shoes and prepared for the game just as we did any other time. What was different this time, was the fact that our entire town had packed one whole side of the bleachers. We couldn't wait to play for them and mostly, for each other. This is what our coaches had been preparing us for all season. The opening tip came and we started out great. The other team came out swinging and it was back and forth the whole game. At halftime we were down by 3, and I remember our team coming together and knowing we wanted it so much more--that this was so much more than just basketball. We had something to prove to Fairbury and the state of Nebraska. We pulled ahead, but it was a battle the entire second half. The best moment came when the final buzzer rang and we realized our state-tournament berth had been secured. The support from the fans to our team was truly something I'll never forget. These words don't do it justice, but in that moment, I had never been more proud to be called a Fairbury Lady Jeff.
Not only did we love being basketball teammates, but we found bonds outside of the court that I know none of us will ever forget. That's what I'm excited for here at UMKC, to find bonds with my teammates that I'll cherish forever.
