The following is the second installment of "'Roos talkin' 'bout 'Roos," a multi-part series introducing the UMKC softball newcomers as told by a returning member of the squad. Noteworthy facts about head coach Meredith Smith Neal's latest additions will be unveiled on a bi-weekly basis as the team approaches the 2015 season.
Sophomore utility player Abby Warkentine continues the series by introducing Florissant, Mo., native, Alicia Shivers.
Alicia Shivers, who prefers to be called “Lici,” graduated from McCluer North High School in Florissant, Mo., in the spring of 2014. She became a member of the University of Missouri-Kansas City's softball team in the fall of 2014. She is the daughter of Lisa and Virgil Shivers and has two older siblings, her brother Kendall and sister Ashley. She plans to major in pre-law with a minor in business.
During her high school years Lici enjoyed participating in many different sports. She enjoyed being diverse and claims to “have a natural ability” when it comes to athletics. She participated in basketball to keep up her endurance and threw shot put and discus in track to maintain her arm strength. However, she soon discovered that her true love was softball.
While being a member of her high school softball team, Lici fielded numerous positions. On many occasions, her coach would approach her with challenging tasks, but, due to her versatility, she handled it well. Her success in these situations landed her the role of captain in her senior year. Some of her other softball honors include, first team Suburban North All-Conference, and first team All-District. In her last two years, Lici batted .568 and .522. Finishing off her career in high school, she made first team All-Conference. Lici expanded her experience in softball through her summer travel teams. In her sophomore year she joined the Wildbunch softball organization. She later joined the Missouri Ice and attended Nationals in Panama City, Fla., where her team placed sixth and maintained a winning record.
Lici's goals for her college experience include, making life long friends, soaking up different opportunities, and remaining level headed with her studies and softball. She hopes to pursue a law degree, and one day help others fight for their rights.
Lici chose UMKC because of its size, her major, and, of course, softball. Lici enjoys crafting in her spare time and exercising. However, she is looking forward to bringing her scooter to school, mainly to fight the hills after 6 a.m. workouts. She said she is most excited, though, about her TempurPedic bed and meeting new people.
