(Kansas City, Mo.) – With its 10th straight victory on Thursday night at the Swinney Recreation Center, the Missouri-Kansas City volleyball team (14-3, 3-0) has set a new school record in what has a chance to be the best season in school history.
In the 3-1 WAC victory over Utah Valley (7-11, 2-2), the first place 'Roos were led offensively by Sydney Crimmins who finished with 17 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while Emma Hagedorn hit .500 with 13 kills. As a team, UMKC notched a .225 hitting clip.
The 'Roos built an early 5-1 lead the match's opening set but Utah Valley stormed back to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 first set win.
UMKC, however, evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 win in set two after scoring three straight with the score tied at 14. The 'Roos then stretched their lead to six after back-to-back kills from Crimmins, a block from Melissa Hartsel and Taylor Buhrow and a UVU error, before Hagedorn closed the set on a kill off a Nicole Wemhoff set.
In set three, the score was again tight midway through as the 'Roos held just a one point advantage at 14-13. Kills from Crimmins and Buhrow put the lead at three, but the Wolverines held tight cutting the margin to two late at 22-20. The Kangaroos, though, would finish strong scoring three of the final for points with Buhrow tallying a kill to put it away, 25-21.
In the final set, Kansas City ended the match with its second straight 25-21 set win to notch the new school record for consecutive wins. This time the 'Roos opened up a six points lead at 16-10, with Utah Valley never getting within three the rest of the way. Two of the final three points then went the 'Roos way, as Crimmins added her final two kills of the day.
In the match, Hendin (14 kills, 10 digs) and Kaylyn Brandt (26 assists, career-high 26 digs) each finished with double-doubles, while Taryn Miller added 23 digs in the back row. At the net, Hartsel registered a team-high seven of the 'Roos 11 blocks. Wemhoff, meanwhile, shared the team lead in assists, as the setter finished with 26.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they put their 10 match win streak on the line against WAC foe Seattle at 1 p.m. in the SRC.
