UMKC Beats Bakersfield, Wins School Record Tying Ninth Straight Match

(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Missouri-Kansas City volleyball team (13-3, 2-0) continued its hot season, picking up its school record tying ninth straight victory with a 3-1 win over Bakersfield (6-11, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif.
Emma Hagedorn led the way for the 'Roos, nearly missing a double with team-high's of nine kills and nine blocks, while Melissa Hartsel also tallied nine kills to go along with five of the team's 15 blocks.
The 'Roos opened the match with a 25-19 first set victory after breaking an 8-8 tie with a 7-2 run that Hartsel capped with a kill. UMKC went on to lead by as many as eight twice, including at 24-16 after a kill Taylor Buhrow, before Hagedorn ended the set with a kill from setter Nicole Wemhoff.
In the second set, the Kangaroos jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Roadrunners fought back to tie the set at 13-13. UMKC answered with a 7-2 run, but Bakersfield again came back, closing the margin to one at 20-19. A kill by Jessica Hendin, though, ended the Bakersfield rally, while Hartsel gave the 'Roos a 2-0 lead with the set ending kill at 25-21.
Bakersfield cut the lead in half with a 25-13 third set win, but UMKC quickly answered with a 25-16 victory in set four to win the match 3-1. In the closing set, the 'Roos built a 15-9 lead after three straight kills from Hagedorn, Hartsel and Hendin. Bakersfield would close the margin to as little as three, but a kill from Buhrow ended the match for the 'Roos.
In the match, both UMKC setters recorded double-doubles as Wemhoff finished with 16 assists and 11 digs and Kaylyn Brandt notched 25 assists and 10 digs. Defensively in the back row, Taryn Miller registered 23 digs, while Sydney Crimmins and Hendin finished with 16 and 15, respectively.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they look to break the school record with its 10th consecutive win against Utah Valley at 7 p.m. in the Swinney Recreation Center.
