(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC men's soccer got on the board in the 80th minute on Friday night at the SMU Invitational against No. 13 Tulsa, but the Golden Hurricane tallied a goal five minutes later and forced overtime, and it finished in a 1-1 tie.
The 'Roos (0-2-2) and Golden Hurricane (3-1-1) played an entertaining offensive match, with both squads creating opportunities. Junior forward Jordan Rideout had three shots in the first 10 minutes, forcing Tulsa to make saves on two of them.
Neither squad could punch through in the opening 45, with TU taking a 12-5 shot advantage into the halftime break. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Corby made six saves for the 'Roos to keep the clean sheet, while Cody Mumma made two saves for the Golden Hurricane.
The second half was an even closer battle, with each team putting four shots on frame. The 'Roos would strike first though, as junior Tato Chiaparro hit a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net in the 80th minute. The goal was his first as a Kangaroo, and it was assisted by sophomore Derek Schrick.
The nationally ranked side went into attack mode after that, hitting the crossbar in the 84th minute, before getting the equalizer from Cristian Mata in the 85th minute. The Golden Hurricane took 9 of their 16 second half shots in the final 10 minutes of the half after UMKC taken the lead.
In the overtime period, TU out-shot the 'Roos by a 7-1 margin, but Corby was forced to make only one save, and neither would get on the board, ending the 'Roos second draw of the year.
Tulsa generated 35 shots, while UMKC took 13 attempts, but only 11 of the TU shots were on frame, while six were on goal for the 'Roos.
Tulsa was paced by the Mata brothers, with leading scorer Cristian putting up 10 shots in the match, while Omar took seven. Only five of the 17 were on frame though. Rideout finished with three shots to lead UMKC.
Corby finished with 10 saves in the game for UMKC, matching a career-high, set against Bradley two seasons ago. He also remained undefeated, tying both games he has started.
The 'Roos will face off against hosts SMU on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. in the final game of the Invitational.
