(USAFA, Colo.) - The Kansas City men's soccer squad pushed second-seeded Bakersfield for as long as it could, but a sudden-death double overtime goal with only 1:33 left on the clock ended the 'Roos season, 1-0.
The Roadrunners (9-8-2) controlled the early part of the contest, generating the first good chance in the fifth minute, but UMKC (4-11-4) junior goalkeeper Chris McGaughey made a big save from close range, the first of many on the day. He had to sit and watch the next chance for CSUB as it clanked the crossbar in the eighth minute.
The 'Runners also had chances in the 12th and 17th minutes, but one went wide of the net and the other was saved. Kansas City got its first good chance in the 21st minute when defender Michael Oakley hit a header on net off a corner kick, but Bakersfield goalkeeper Anthony Perez made the save to keep it tied at zero.
The next chance came just a couple minutes later when Bakersfield hit a one-time tap from inside the six off a cross, but McGaughey came up huge again with a quick reaction save down low. The 'Roos settled down from there though and started to gain some possession, while keeping the Bakersfield offense at bay with numerous offside calls. CSUB out-shot UMKC 13-4 in the half,
The game went into the break still tied, and UMKC came out and played well in the first 10 minutes of the second as well.
The tide started to turn in the favor of Bakersfield though, drilling a shot off the post in the 59th minute, but Kansas City got its best chance in the 65th minute when senior Tom McCarthy drilled a shot from 22 out that Perez tipped over the net.
Another save by McGaughey kept the 'Runners off the board in the 71st, before they generated the game's best chance in the 77th minute, with McGaughey making another save, followed by a rebound that was saved from going in just outside of the goal line by Oakley.
The game went into overtime, but neither team generated a great chance until the game-winner in the second OT when Hugo Vinales beat the offsides call, receiving a through ball down the right side for a breakaway goal in the 108th minute.
CSUB had 33 shots, 13 on goal, while the 'Roos had 15 shots, eight of which were on frame. McGaughey tallied 11 saves, while Perez piled up eight.
